Exterior Description And Setting

A 4 arch random rubble sandstone bridge on the line of the old Glenshane Road. Segmental arches are of 5½ metre span and having thin deep rubble voissoirs. Arches spring from wide supports also in random rubble without string course and terminated upstream and downstream with triangular breakwaters with pyramidal tops. Bases of supporting walls are strengthened with concrete aprons. Abutment on each side extend a considerable distance beyond the arches. Soffits of arches are in random rubble. Each arch has 2 strengthening tie rods with square flat patress plates. The carriageway over the bridge is more or less straight and approximately 6 metres between parapet walls. The road on either side dips down towards the bridge. The parapet walls are 43 metres long on each side. The parapets are finished with a cement coping. Some of the rubble walling is roughly squared. Water usually flows through 3 arches. The bridge enjoys a fine
setting on the upper River Roe and forms part of the late 18th. and early 19th. century route of the old Glenshane Road from Dungiven to Maghera. On the eastern end, upstream and beyond the parapet wall a laneway leads from the county road to the river’s edge.

The line of the old road is indicated on the 1832 O.S. map. This old route is shown dotted on contemporary maps. The bridge probably dates from the late 18th century and is well preserved. IHR. A fine 4 arch random rubble sandstone late 18th century bridge crossing the River Roe on the line of the old Dungiven Maghera Road. It enjoys a handsome setting on the upper Roe valley where the road enters the Glenshane Pass. Along with the adjoining Tamniarin bridge (HB02/07/022) it merits listing.
