Exterior Description And Setting

A two storey, two bay vernacular house with a two storey outbuilding to left gable. Set on roadside and aligned W-E up lane on E side of Newtown Road. Roof of house is pitched natural slate with tile skews to both ends and a slightly advanced eaves course. Many slates off. There are no chimneys or rainwater goods. Walls are random rubble with remains of lime render. Principal elevation faces N. At extreme left is a projecting gabled porch, the apex of which is almost to eaves level, with overhanging eaves and plain bargeboards. It has a t+g sheeted door to N face and its right and left cheeks are blank. To right of porch, each bay has a single window to each floor. All have roughly dressed granite cills and the remains of 1/1 margin-paned sliding sash windows. Left gable is completely abutted by the outbuilding (see later). Rear elevation has a single 1/1 top hung metal window (without cill) to ground floor left. Entrance at right end contains modern metal sheeted door. Right gable is blank. Outbuilding: Outbuilding is detailed as house. Cement left verge. It has an advanced eaves course with metal downpipe at left of principal elevation. Guttering has gone. Elevation to road has two window openings to each floor, in line with each other. Those to ground floor have granite cills. To right is a small ventilation opening in what was once a doorway, now infilled. Left gable has a t+g sheeted loading door to first floor centre. Its surround is of cement render and probably indicates a more recent insertion. The rear elevation has two ground floor door openings. It is abutted to extreme left by the vestiges of a lower shed with remains of a monopitched corrugated metal roof. Right gable is completely abutted by the house. Setting: These buildings are set directly along the roadside with a rear garden to the house containing further outbuildings (of no interest). All are enclosed by a rubble stone boundary wall.

Evaluation

This vernacular dwelling is set in a quiet cul-de-sac and once formed a part of a clachan. Along with its adjoining outbuilding and No 20 Newtown Road (HB16/13/060) it forms a pleasant group.
