Exterior Description And Setting

Left one of a pair of two-storey, two bay vernacular houses aligned E-W up lane to E of Newtown Road. Pitched natural slate roof with modern red brick chimney set to right of centre. Brick skew to left gable only and metal framed skylight to right on front pitch. Slightly advanced eaves course, but no rainwater goods. Walls are lime-rendered and white washed over random rubble. Principal elevation faces S. To left end is a windbreak porch with monopitch natural slate roof. T+g sheeted entrance door. Left and right cheeks are blank. To its right, each bay has a single window to each floor. All are 2/2 sashes with horns and painted stone cills. Those to first floor are diminished in height and have timber cills; they are set directly below eaves level. Left gable is blank. Rear elevation is almost completely abutted by a single storey extension. Whitewashed random rubble walls, monopitched corrugated metal roof, no rainwater goods. Two windows on N face – that to left is a large modern casement (with concrete cill); that to right is an original small 6/3 sliding sash with granite cill. Plain t+g door in right cheek. Right gable is completely abutted by a slightly higher building which is much altered with enlarged window openings and modern door. Rear yard has a one and a half storey outbuilding detailed as house with t+g openings. Yard is accessed by a loop-headed wrought iron gate supported on concrete block gate piers.

Evaluation

An attractive vernacular house with interesting window-to-wall ratio. Set in a quiet cul-de-sac and once formed a part of a clachan. Along with its outbuilding, adjoining building and No 26 Newtown Road (HB16/13/061) it forms a pleasant group.
