Exterior Description And Setting

A single storey, two bay vernacular dwelling with outbuilding on lane west off Ballintemple Road, aligned N-S on the E slope of Slieve Gullion, overlooking the AONB Ring of Gullion. Pitched natural slate roof with tiled skews and a brick chimney to either gable (that to left is modern). All walls have the remains of whitewashed lime render over random rubble, repaired in places with cement. Principal elevation faces E. Left bay has a windbreak porch to right with pitched natural slate roof. Front face has been cement rendered and contains a t+g sheeted door. Right and left cheeks are blank. To its left is an exposed box 2/2 sliding sash with granite cill. Right bay has a similar window to centre. Left gable is blank. Rear elevation has a single 2/2 fixed-pane window with granite cill, to right bay. Right gable is blank. Outbuilding: Set to the N of the dwelling is a two-storey rubble stone outbuilding aligned E-W. Pitched natural slate roof with terracotta tiled skews. There are two door openings to ground floor, placed to either side of centre, and one to first floor right, now sheeted over. Left gable is abutted by a set of granite steps leading to a t+g loading door at centre. Rear has a t+g sheeted loading door to first floor left. Right gable is abutted by a single storey lean-to (of no interest); the exposed section has a tiny window opening.

Historical Information

First shown on the 1906-07 OS map, but not the 1861 edition. This suggests a later 19th century construction date, but its precise dating cannot be established from the Valuation books.
