Exterior Description And Setting

Single-storey/ three-bay vernacular dwelling with outbuilding to right gable. It is aligned north-south parallel to east side of Seafin Road. Pitched natural slate roof with tiled skew to left gable. Two lime rendered chimneys – one to left gable and one just right of centre. Raised eaves course but no gutters. Walls are lime rendered random rubble. Principal elevation faces west. Set to right of centre is a large square-in-section porch with pyramidal natural slate roof and advanced eaves. Front face has a window opening, now infilled with rubble. Left cheek is blank. Right cheek has a plywood sheeted door with timber lintel. Granite water trough to its right. To left of porch are two window openings and to right is one. Vestiges of 6/3 exposed-box sash on second opening from left. All have granite cills. Left gable has window opening with granite cill detailed as front on attic floor at right. The rear elevation is built into a bank. It has three small windows – one to each bay (but cill-less to right bay). Right gable is completely abutted by a one-and-a half storey ruinous outbuilding (but same roofline as house). Roof has gone and walls are as house. Front face has two door openings. Setting On elevated maturely planted site. Enclosed from road by a rubble boundary wall. Access by a modern gate supported on circular gate pillars with remains of conical copings.

Historical Information

This building is first shown in its present form on the 1906-07 map, and was therefore erected sometime between this date and the previous OS map edition of 1861. Its valuation in 1862 was £2.10s.0d and this remains unchanged in the Valuation revisions. The constancy of its valuation suggests no major changes. One can only conclude, on the basis of this evidence, that the building was erected in the early 1860s. Primary sources: 1.
