Exterior Description And Setting

A single storey, four bay vernacular house aligned N-S on the E side of the Dublin Road. Pitched natural slate roof; right end has asbestos slates. There is a brick chimney placed at party wall between bays 1 and 2, and between bays 3 and 4 (as viewed from W). Half-round metal rainwater goods. Walls are cement rendered and painted, with a chamfered base-course and stepped quoins to each elevation. All windows are modern timber top-hung casements (unless otherwise stated) with painted reveals and painted concrete cills. Principal elevation faces W. Bay 2 has a gabled windbreak porch to right with pitched natural slate roof and decorative timber bargeboards. Main face is decoratively painted and contains a modern glazed timber door. Right and left cheeks are blank. To its left is a window. Extreme left bay has two windows; that to left is a narrow 1x3 casement. Bays 3 and 4 each have a single window to centre. Left gable is abutted by a lower addition (exposed section is blank). It has a pitched corrugated metal roof with cement rendered skew to the exposed gable. Walls are as house. There is a t+g door to right on front elevation. Left gable is blank. Rear elevation cement rendered with a modern door to left. Rear elevation is unpainted and has a window to each bay. All are 1x3 metal-framed casements, with the exception of that to extreme left end which is 1/2 with a rendered reveal. There is a modern timber door with corrugated plastic awning set at left of extreme right bay. Right gable is blank. Setting: The house is separated from the road by a well-maintained hedged garden to front and has a small elevated garden to rear.

Historical Information

A building is shown here on the 1835 OS map. It has no valuation so must have been a small one storey building, similar to the present one (although possibly not as long). It is valued at £1.5s.0d in the 1862 second Valuation and there is no change thereafter. It probably assumed its present length by 1862. Primary sources: 1.
