Exterior Description And Setting

A two storey single bay house with two single storey additions to S, all aligned N-S on E side of Flagstaff Rd. Pitched natural slate roof (in ruinous condition) with tiled skews. There is a brick cement rendered chimney to left gable of two storey block (this appears to be a dummy), and a masonry chimney to left end of the right single storey block. There are half-round metal gutters. Walls are wet-dashed over random rubble. Principal elevation faces W. The façade of the two-storey block is symmetrical. To centre is a projecting canopy over the front door, which has four bolection-moulded panels. The canopy has a pitched natural slate roof and decorative bargeboards. To either side, on each floor, is a modern timber casement window. All have concrete cills. The facade of each single storey block has a single window opening, formerly with sliding sash windows. Each has a granite cill. Left gable has a window to centre of each floor, as façade of main block. Rear elevation: Most of the main block and part of the middle block are abutted by a more recent single storey addition. The main block has a small window to first floor, set to left of centre. There is a window to middle block, just left of abutting section. Left block is blank. The rear abutment has a shallow monopitched natural slate roof and wet dashed concrete walls. It has a modern door and windows and is of no interest. Exposed section of the right gable of main block is blank. The right gable of the right single storey block has a ground floor window opening to centre.

Historical Information

A building is shown here on the 1835 OS map. It has no valuation so must have been a small one storey building. It is valued at £1.5s.0d in the 1862 second Valuation and there is no change thereafter. It may have assumed its present one and two storey form by 1862, but the wall finishes and window material indicate a substantial refurbishment in the comparatively recent past. Primary sources: 1.
