Exterior Description And Setting

A two storey, three bay house on W side of the Fathom Line, aligned roughly N-S. Pitched natural slate roof with brick chimney to left gable. Advanced smooth rendered and painted eaves course supports half-round plastic rainwater goods. Walls are cement dashed and painted with smooth rendered and painted basecourse. Two platbands – one below eaves level and the other at cill level of first floor; corners are also smooth rendered. Principal elevation faces E. All windows are modern top-hung timber casements with smooth rendered and painted architraves and cills. Each bay has a window to each floor, all equally aligned; that to G/F right bay is landscape. Set to the right of the middle window is a modern glazed timber door with matching sidelight to its right. Left and right gables are blank. The latter is abutted by a single-storey flat roof addition (of no interest). Rear elevation is abutted to left and middle bays by a two-storey extension with flat roof rising above the eaves level of main block. Extension is detailed as house. The exposed right bay of main block has a window to ground floor. Setting. To front is a small garden enclosed to road by a cement rendered wall, square-in-section gate piers support modern cast-iron gates. To rear, the garden rises steeply with the slope of the hill.

Historical Information

A building is shown here on the 1835 OS map. It has no valuation so must have been a small one storey building. It is valued at £1 in the 1862 second Valuation. Its rateable value increases to £2.5s.0d in 1877 and there is no change thereafter. It was probably raised to its present two storey form at that date. Primary sources: 1.
