Exterior Description And Setting

Two storey, four structural bay long , smooth rendered house in a vernacular Georgian style facing north onto Dungiven main street. Natural slate roof with two chimney stacks, one on each gable. Door located in second bay from west gable. Elliptical cobweb fanlight recessed in narrow plain surround with entablature below over wide entrance door with pilasters and supporting scroll moulding. Four pane sliding sashes to ground floor with two pane casements to first floor. All aligning. Cast iron rainwater goods. West elevation blank with alleyway along side. Rear south facing elevation mainly obscured by two storey lean- to low pitch shed. Windows to western- most bay exposed. Casement at first floor French windows at ground level. Remains of orchard in overgrown garden to rear. No windows to east gable. Shed returns around half of the elevation. The house is sited at back of footwalk with access to rear at west end.

Historical Information

Building appears on this location in the 1st Edition Ordnance Survey Map. It is not marked as a rectory and it is unclear when this function started. The last rector occupied the building in 1970 before the present building was built in the grounds of Strangemore House (HB02/06/014) at the other end of Main Street. Present occupants found timbers when renovating suggesting that the building was single storey at one stage. This would be consistent with reports that the Skinners improved a number of single storey houses in the 1870s (Curl) and explains the difference in window construction. A simple building which adds character to Main Street particularly because of its well detailed doorway which is complemented by the surrounding window openings. Not of quality to merit listing.
