Exterior Description And Setting

A vertical piece of schist of rectangular cross section and approximately 1800mm high-sited on top of a wide grassy mound. The stone is 1200mm wide and 300 in depth. The mound was described as 9 metres in diameter.

Historical Information

A standing stone which may be of pre historic origin. However in Bunn’s booklet on “Dungiven Days” it states that “Tradition states erected to record ecclesiastical assembly held there in 590 AD at which St Columbcille was present”. The O.S. Memoirs refers to “an earther mound or tumulus with a stale or pillar-stone, situated on the summit of a hill near the old church of Dungiven and usually called Leac Phadraig or “St Patrick’s Stone”.
