Exterior Description And Setting

A former corn and tuck mill with fast flowing mill race driving an electric turbine. The former L plan mill is ruinous though much of the walls are standing but overgrown. It is assumed that the former mill wheel was on the millrace side and may have been external to the building. The mill race is extant along with the remains of the flume. However the millrace from the former flume position is piped to cross under the Derrychier Road to drive a turbine on the other side where a small contemporary hut contains the control gear for the electricity generated. The owner uses the electricity for his own purposes. His farmhouse is a short distance away on the Glenshane Road. The millrace is complete with sluices, overflows etc and comes quite a distance through fields from a weir further upstream on the Owenbeg River.

Historical Information

A corn mill and tuck mill is indicated on this site, including mill race, on the O.S. Map 1830. The O.S. Memoirs refers to a 13 foot diameter breast fed water wheel supplying a flax mill. Remains of an early 19th cent. corn and tuck mill. The mill race is of interest in that it is still in use driving a contemporary turbine.
