Exterior Description And Setting

1½ storey 8 bay long back return to Ashpark (HB02/05/005A) containing cottage and outbuildings, slated and gabled. The principal elevation which overlooks and forms one side of the farmyard faces N E. The 1st 5 bays from Ashpark forms the cottage which has a low square headed timber sheeted door and on each side 2no, 12 pane sliding sash windows, 3 panes high. Above three of these ground floor windows and hard under the eaves horizontally sliding 8 pane windows, 2 panes high. Painted sandstone cills, harled and painted walls with painted plinth. The outbuilding, continuing in line with the cottage has a single square headed sheeted wood door with 4 pane sliding sash windows on each side and having sash box exposed. Above the windows there are 2no. louvred square openings. Wall is harled and painted without plinth. PVC ½ round guttering, downpipe and soilpipe. The long roof is slated with 2no.chimneys both plastered, one small, the other, nearer Ashpark, large, but having only 2 pots, and serves the kitchen. Roof slated with clay ridge. The opposite long wall has 4 no.window openings with wall harled. The gable wall has random rubble stonework unplastered and has a high level single sheeted wood door with louvred square opening on each side. There are other farm buildings forming the other 2 sides of the farmyard which are in various stages of disrepair.

The cottage and outbuilding would appear to be contemporary with Ashpark and at least dates from the late 18th cent. The cottage was a farm worker’s residence and is presently the home of a tenant, who also" takes" or rents the farm attached on his own behalf. References Primary Sources 1. O.S. A late 18th cent. farmworker’s cottage with barn attached. Of interest for the window types used, particularly the first floor horizontally sliding sashes. It has important group value with Ashpark House.
