Exterior Description And Setting

The earlier bridge was demolished and replaced. The present bridge is a modern concrete beam single span bridge carrying the Ballyquin Road over the Gelvin River. It is more or less in the same location as previous bridge.

Historical Information

The present bridge was erected in the later 1990's. Although structurally sound the bridge was considered inadequate in capacity and dangerous for what had become a busy main road. The previous bridge was described in the 1st Buildings Survey as “Twin segmental arch rubble-stone bridge over Gelvin River. Angled cutwaters on up and downstream sides. No ornamentation”. It further states “Bridge cited here on 1832 map onwards. Probably dates to late 18th century, earlier 19th century”. See report by F.W. Hamond dated 26/5/1993. IHR.
