Exterior Description And Setting


Site, (to the north of the Mountstewart Road roughly 3.5 miles north west of Greyabbey), of a former single storey house, demolished c.1992 with new single storey house now occupying site. Stone semicircular arched door surround of former building has been preserved and is now used as surround for back door (NW elevation) of modern house. The original house is described in the first survey of 1971 as : 'Single storey farmhouse. Roof slated gable end chimneys rendered. Walls 'salt & pepper' rough cast [dry dash]. Five drop hung [sash] windows, vertical astragals. 'Ards' doorway between 3rd and 4th windows [with] stone surround and semicircular arch head, keystone and plain pilasters. Decorative fanlight and recent door. Condition fair. Front about 65ft. Farm buildings adjacent'.

A building is shown partly on this site on the OS Map of 1834, which probably corresponds to the house on the site until recently. The old house was demolished c.1992, but its door surround preserved and incorporated into the new dwelling.
