Exterior Description And Setting

Long plain single storey hipped roof block consisting of pair of handed dwellings possibly built as estate worker's dwellings in the early 1800s. The block is situated at the side of the Newtownards Road, less than a mile north of Greyabbey and set at a slightly lower level than the road itself. Both houses are finished in rough cast render and the whole block has an slated hipped roof, with three evenly spaced brick chimney stacks. No.95 has PVC rw goods with PVC to No.97. The front S elevation of No.95 (to the E side) is asymmetrical and has a left of centre timber and glazed stable door, with a modern two pane timber window to the left and two to the right. Similar window to right on E elevation. The rear has two similar, but more squat, windows to the left, and a small gabled return to the right. The E elevation of the return has a plain timber sheeted door to the left and a window, much as before, to the right. The gable of the return has a large three pane timber window. The front facade of No.97 follows its neighbour in handed fashion and has a similar door, but its windows are casement. W elevation has a modern three pane timber window to the right. There is a small gabled return to the left at the rear of No.97, with a small flat (corrugated) roofed porch projection the intersection of the main house and the return. The porch has a multi pane window to the W side and a timber sheeted door to the N. The return has a three pane timber window to the W side and also to the left on the gable. There is a metal six pane window to the left of the return on the main house.

This block is shown on the OS Map of 1834, minus returns. The owner of No.95 has consulted the Londonderry Papers [PRONI] and has evidence (in the form of a photocopy of an 1807 map) to show that the houses were built between 1807 and c.1830, on land belonging to the Londonderry estate.
