Exterior Description And Setting


A 1½ storey 3-bay gabled house formerly thatched but now with a tiled roof. Main entrance is in the north side of a central porch on the west elevation. Roof of modern tiles, with timber barge boards; walls rendered, with dry dash of stone chippings, with a smooth cement rendered plinth; one chimney on east gable, rendered as walls; windows modern rectangular timber fixed lights with top-hung vents; porch roofed as main block; modern rectangular glazed and panelled door. North and south gables have one small window to upper level; modern windows of same character as front; similar type to rear elevation. SETTING: The building stands in a rural area facing the main road and set back slightly from it with a tarmac area in front. Projecting from it on the south of the entrance front is a rubble stone boundary wall, whitened. Adjacent on the north is a run of gabled outbuildings, rubble stone walled and whitened, with corrugated asbestos and slated roofs; rubble stone boundary wall beyond incorporating a pair of rubble stone gate piers with caps of field stones and a plain iron gate.

Historical Information


Precise date of construction not known but it appears on the OS map of 1832-3. The house was described in the first survey in 1972 as “A 1½ storey harled and whitened thatched cottage with a small brick chimney on either gable. A rendered gabled porch is flanked either side by an unrecessed sashed window with horizontal division. Upper accommodation is lighted by plain sashed windows in gables. Fenestration at rear retains Georgian glazing. Outbuildings are not of interest.” References – Primary Sources 1. OS Map 1832-3, Co Antrim 55.
