Exterior Description And Setting

An occupied two bay direct-entry vernacular building accessed by lane to east of Edentrumly Rd. Aligned east-west up slope. The kitchen bay is one-and-a-half storeys high and is at the upper (E) end of the house. Pitched natural slate roof with rendered chimney on E gable. The bedroom is one storey high and is at the lower (W) end. Pitched corrugated metal roof (tarred) with rendered chimney on W gable. All walls are whitewashed and lime rendered random rubble; slightly advanced eaves course to kitchen. Principal elevation faces N. Small gabled windbreak at right end of kitchen bay, with modern stained timber door. To left is a small 6/6 sash window with painted timber cill. To centre of right bay is a small 2/2 fixed window (again with timber cill). Left (E) gable has a small 1/1 fixed window to upper floor at right. Rear (S) elevation has a 2/2 sash to left (bedroom) bay and a 1/1 top opener to right (kitchen). Right (W) gable blank. Setting Yard to front has two small single bay outbuildings at NE corner. Tarred and felted roofs and whitewashed random rubble walls; of no special interest.

Historical Information

House with this footprint shown on 1834 OS 6” map; not valued (i.e. under £5). No change in valuation between 1860s and 1920s. Evaluation

This building, appears to have originally been a one room cabin, subsequently extended by a bay. It is unusual to find an unaltered vernacular still in occupation. Its continual maintenance has secured the retention of most original features or their sympathetic replacement (with the possible exception of the front door).
