Exterior Description And Setting

The house, faces north, and is sited about three miles south-west of Garvagh on the road that eventually joins the Dungiven/ Coleraine road about four miles from the former town. The house is set at an angle behind a forecourt south of the roadway. The building is single story with plastered and whitened wall finishes and a thatched covering between concrete skews that are flashed with lead. Each gable rises to a plain chimneystack, that on the left (east) side incorporates a clay pot, and there is a further plain stack on the ridgeline serving the kitchen hearth. These features are lead flashed also. Rebuilding after a fire extended the thatch over a bay to the left (east) that was formerly slated. The entrance with timber sheeted half door, placed slightly right of centre, is flanked to the left (east) by two and to the right (west) by three 6/6 vertically sliding windows with sash stops and sills of traditional depths. The three to the right (west) are more closely spaced than those on the opposite side of the doorway. This is an alteration from the situation recorded in January 1973 at which time these windows were plain sashed. There are no openings in the east gable and a corrugated iron roofed outbuilding abuts the west gable. At the rear there is a 6/6 vertically sliding widow either side of the kitchen bed outshot and another window of slightly reduced height is placed towards the west end of the elevation. These windows are similar in detail to those at the front. Plain sashes were recorded also on this elevation in 1973. A small 3x2 fixed light remains from the earlier building to light the pantry. It is positioned between the two left-hand (west) windows. A crank handle pump is placed at the west side of the house.

A building is shown on this site on the OS map of 1831 / 32, but not noted in the contemporary valuation. The second valuation of 1856 records the occupant as O'Kane as the lessor, with the rateable value calculated at £1. Evaluation

The house faces north and is alongside the Garvagh/ Dungiven road, about three miles south west of Garvagh. It iscentrally located in the area historically known as Glen Ullin.The restoration following the fire of March 1993 has been carried out with sensitivity. The original layout with bed outshot has been retained and the bay to the left (east) has been incorporated in an acceptable way. The windows have been restored to match earlier types with division of the sashes into small panes. The replaced internal woodwork has been used in a traditional way.
