Exterior Description And Setting

A range of outbuildings, relating to the farmhouse opposite (HB01/26/001 mostly 2 storey high, stone built with brick trim to openings, pitched roofs with natural slates. The outbuildings are arranged around 4 sides of a square farmyard, totally enclosed except for wide entrance, centrally placed, from Upper Galliagh Road. The yard slopes from north to south. As one goes through the gateway to the farmyard, there appears to be an office and adjacent to it a 2 storey dwelling with projecting gabled porch to the yard. The porch is probably a later addition. The wall of the east range i.e. to the Upper Galliagh Road has no windows or doors. To the courtyard, segmental wide openings are provided for cart access with single doors provided and windows inserted at ground floor level in an orderly manner and a certain amount of balance. On the upper floor windows are regularly spaced, some with 16 panes, some with 9, others fitted with shutters and some louvred. The outer walls of the north, south and west range have either louvred or shuttered windows. Against the outer wall of the south range is a lean-to slated range in similar masonry construction to the main building. Roofs are double without trusses but with coupled ties at wide centres supporting purlins which in turn support the closely spaced rafters. In part some of the ranges have lofts. To the south and east there are additional ranges running parallel to the main buildings. Within the square farmyard there have been erected modern steel framed and corrugated iron structures which obscure the impact of the original complex.

Evaluation

A range of farm outbuildings of the later Victorian period, reasonably well preserved though the farmyard space has been spoiled by modern intrusions. The symmetrical arrangement around a square with simple cart access has almost an industrial character.
