Exterior Description And Setting

A one and a half storey gabled, asbestos slated roof with gable chimneys. It is three bay wide with central doorway, half dormers and long back return. The main entrance has a four panelled door with shallow rectangular fanlight over a straight cornice supported on scrolls crowning pilasters on each side of doorway. There is a stopped and moulded label moulding to door which continues across the front of the house but is broken by two bay windows. The bay to the west is a shallow rectangle with two tall casement windows. The bay has a moulded cornice with sweeping curved painted roof covering. The bay to the east is canted with three tall casement windows with slated faceted roof. Above the bays there is a plain string course which returns along each gable. There is also a plain string course in line with the bay window cills but not returned on gables. The wide half dormers, which are canted over the bays, spring from the string course and are gabled and slated with unadorned bargeboards and ridge tiles. Under the roof eaves there is a frieze band on the principal elevation punctuated with piers of modillions. Above the entrance door a small sash window is fitted in between the string course and eaves. The back return is not centred on the main front so that the stair landing extends into it and is lit by a window on the east wall. A window is also placed to the rear of the sitting room. Beyond the two storey back return are a single storey outhouse and stable roofed in corrugated iron. The remainder of the back return has natural slates. Windows are a mixture of sliding sash and casement. The house is colour washed externally. Gutters are painted black.

A house with back return is indicated on the OSS 14 1830 and 1853 but it does not accord with the present layout. The present house probably dates from the 1860s.
