Exterior Description And Setting

Two storey/ three bay L-plan house on north side of Newry Road, just south of St Colman’s Church (HB16/05/003). . Pitched natural slate roof, terracotta crested ridges and coped verges. Two rendered chimneys to front pitch to either side of central bay (aligned at right angles to facade), and two to rear pitch on each end bay (aligned parallel with facade). Cast iron ogee rainwater goods. Walls are rockfaced concrete blockwork laid in regular courses over an advanced base course with a smooth chamfered top. The wall has rendered corbelled eaves. All dressings smooth concrete blockwork, with stop-ended chamfered arrises. Between ground and first floor is moulded stringcourse which extends around all four walls of the main block (but not the return). Principal facade faces south onto road. Entrance on central bay up two concrete steps. Modern eight panelled door and sidelights with concrete cills. All glazing is leaded and stained. Above each side light and door is a modern transom light. Modern metal lantern lights flank. At first floor is a large modern stained glass window, set in an original opening. All windows have concrete cills. Symmetrically arranged to either side of middle bay are two storey canted bays with hipped natural slate roof (terracotta finials). Each cheek on both floors has a 6/1 sliding sash window; however, those to first floor right have been replaced by modern 6/1 top hung casements. Each set of bay windows shares a continuous cill. Left elevation is two bays wide. Its left bay has a slightly advanced coped gable with a natural slate roof . Left bay has 6/1 sliding sash to ground and first floors. Right bay has, at right, a 6/1 sliding sash window to ground and first floors. Rear elevation is abutted to left by a two storey return. Remaining wall of main block is blank. Rear return walls are as main block but without base and stringcourses. Its roof and verge are as main block but with slightly lower ridge and eaves. One rendered chimney on ridge, parallel to facade. West elevation (right cheek) of return has a four panelled (bolection moulded) door at ground floor right, up two concrete steps with retaining wall at left with heavy concrete coping. Small 6/6sliding sash to left of door. Between ground floor and first floor at extreme left is a 6/1 landing light. At first floor are three windows: two 6/1 between which is a narrow 4/1 sliding sash. Wall continues at ground floor left as a one storey gabled outshot with a 1/1 sliding sash. North facing gable of rear return in abutted at ground floor right by the outshot. At ground floor left the wall is rendered and painted with two modern top hung casements. Centred at first floor is a 6/1 sliding sash and a small 1/1 sash to attic above. Modern metal boiler flue fixed to right hand side of wall. Outshot has a monopitch slate roof sloping to yard. The latter is enclosed by a high coped wall and has a sheeted timber door to north elevation. Left elevation of main block has four 6/1 sashes to ground floor and three to first floor; that to top left is a modern casement. Wall continues to right as the (plain) left cheek of the two-storey return and has two 6/1 sashes to ground and to first floor. To front is a small garden with modern granite boundary wall to road. Areas immediately around house are tarmac. At rear is an asbestos roofed garage.

Unfortunately Canon Starkey, who is in charge of Lower Mourne diocese, could not find the records belonging to this house. It is believed to have been erected in the 1920s.
