Exterior Description And Setting

Behind modern bungalow is a yard with much older farm buildings on three sides on a well established site at end of lane on south side of Cranfield Road. The eastern range is single storey, and of harled and whitewashed random rubble. South half is roofed with tin and gabled and north half is of natural slated and hipped. Along the outer side is a rendered blockwork extension. The northern range is natural slated and gabled with cement verges, corbelled eaves, harled whitewashed rubble stone walls and blockwork extension to the outside wall. To the inside wall are two rubble stone built, monopitch, lean-to later extensions identical to each other except that one has a tin roof and the other is natural slated; both are mono-pitched and slope down to eaves of main block. These appear to be an animal house with feed loft above but are most unusual in shape and form. The western range is “L” shaped with a pigsty against the outside wall; the east-west return is a single open space with a loft at one end. The north-south range is two bays wide. Both have a natural slate roofs and whitewashed and harled rubble walls. All these buildings are in an advanced state of decay. Replacement bungalow: Concrete tiled roof, and cement harled walls with casement windows. There is no sign of any of the original dwelling but there is a traditional wrought iron pedestrian gate into the garden.

Historical Information

Buildings are shown at this location on the 1834 OS 6” map. The 1835 Valuation notes the owner as Joseph Moore; the house measured 57ft x 23ft6in x 10ft high. It continued in Moore’s ownership in the 1863 Valuation, when it is described as a “respectable farm house and extension offices and good view of sea”. The HMBB survey card is blank and undated. Evaluation

Although some of the outbuildings are of some interest, the dominance of the replacement dwelling greatly detracts from the site as a whole.
