Exterior Description And Setting

Present site is opposite the main entrance to the Star of the Sea Church (completed 1969) and set in front of a number of recent priests’ graves. Its original site was at the north side of Killylane Road in the Townland of Tullybrisland I G Ref C5569 2085. A large stone approximately 1500 x 1200mm of irregular shape and about 500mm high made of schist. There is a slight flat area on top on which is scratched a rude cross. Presently the stone rests on another squared stone set in a grassy area of ground before four graves.

Historical Information

This may have been a mass rock. It was removed to its present position about twenty years ago. Ordnance Survey Memoir records “At the Cross hill there is, on the side of the road, a large stone on which a schoolmaster carved the sign of the Cross about 12 years ago. The lines which were very faint and almost indecipherable, are liable to be mistaken for an ancient and interesting inscription.” Monument Ref: LDY SH.28, 15:27 References: Ordnance Survey Memoir Vol. 36 P.31 Parish Priest of Faughanvale.
