Exterior Description And Setting


A simple concrete telephone kiosk at the east end of the outer south quay (opposite the repair slipway), against the north face of the quay wall. Measures 1.5m square in plan, and 2.4m high. Flat concrete roof and rendered cement walls. Door to west face and small square windows to north and east faces. Neither door nor windows survive. South wall blank. Over the north and west openings in raised capitals is the word ‘Telephone’.

Shown on 1949 OS map, and probably of post-war date. Although installed as a public phone, it was mainly used by fish buyers at the quayside fish auctions. Long since disused. Primary sources: 1. Mr F.M. Chambers, Kilkeel Harbour. 2. PRONI – OS 10/3/56/13/2.
