Exterior Description And Setting

Early 19th century two-storey / three-bay house on north side of Bridge Street. Pitched artificial slate roof with cement rendered chimney to left gable. Walls are modern wet dash. All windows are modern top-hung timber with dressed granite cills. Principal elevation has a modern partly-glazed stained timber front door in middle bay. Single window to left bay. To right bay is an infilled coachway, the jambs and voussoirs of which are dressed granite with keystone incised: ‘J 1818 S’. Infilled void now contains a window. To first floor are three equally spaced windows. Left and right gables are abutted by adjoining properties. Rear elevation is rendered and painted, much altered and now with no features of interest.

Historical Information

The datestone commemorates the building’s construction in 1818. The ‘JS’ is probably John Shannon and is possibly the same person who operated the Kilmorey Arms Hotel in 1860 (HB16/03/012). An early 20th century photography by W.A. Green shows the roof covered with large slates, and the walls to be smooth rendered and painted. The front door has a multi-paned transom, and there is an 8/8 sliding sash to ground floor left and sheeted timber doors to coachway. At first floor the windows are 6/6 sliding sashes. Sources: 1.
