Exterior Description And Setting

This is one of the older buildings forming the continuous frontage to the east side of Greencastle Street. The shop front is of particular interest. The building is three storeys high and two bays wide, with a two-storey return. Pitched natural slate roof, with concrete tile ridge. Cast-iron skylight to rear pitch. Rendered and coped chimney to left side. Half round metal gutters. The street frontage is lined smooth render, and has a projecting masonry eaves course. The shop front fills the larger structural bay at ground floor left (two openings wide above). A segmental headed carriage entry fills the right bay (one opening wide); it has a pair of metal doors. The shop front has, at right, a recessed entrance flanked by a curved-glass display window. There is a larger conventional window at left. The stall riser comprises a moulded painted pilaster at each end with boxed fascia, hand-painted sign, awning and console stop-ends at top. A modern steel security shutter has been fitted below the fascia. First and second floors each have three 1/1sash windows, regularly spaced and in line with one another, but diminished in height at second floor. The left and right elevations are abutted by adjoining premises. The rear elevation is abutted to its right bay by a two-storey return of no interest. The top floor of the main block has at least two 4/4 sashes (not all visible). There is a small 1/1 sash at first floor left, over the carriage entrance.

Historical Information

A building is shown here on the 1834 town map and described as a house in the valuation of the same year. However, the present building seems to be of 1860s date. It is described in the 1862 valuation as “house and office in progress”, and measured 14yds x 7.75yds x three storeys. It is also noted as “unfinished”, although this might have meant that it was built but unplastered as the latter is also specifically noted. It was nevertheless occupied as a house during the 1860s. It continues to be described as a house in the valuations to 1925 (and possibly beyond as well), although this is not to say that a shop did not exist by this time. Primary sources: 1.
