Exterior Description And Setting

Two two-storey houses now converted into a single shop, set in a row of buildings on north side of Greencastle Street. The left property (No.16) is three bays wide and the right (No.14) is two wide. Pitched natural slate roof with clay ridging and tiled verges to either end. Two cement-rendered chimneys - one to left gable, the other on party wall. Ogee metal rainwater goods with downpipe to right of façade. There are two added dormers to façade, one to each house; that to No.14 is set to left, and that to No.16 is centred. Both have very shallow segmental roofs and painted sheeted-timber cheeks. Each has three rectangular lights, but their glazing has been replaced with painted boards. Façade to street is painted smooth cement render, with stepped raised render quoins. At ground floor left of no.16 is a square-headed coachway, now with roller-shutter over. Remainder of ground floor façade of both properties has a large modern aluminium-framed shop window with five equal panels, four of which are glazed and left one containing a pair of doors. Over is a large plastic box fascia reading ‘Dunnes Stores’. There are five equally spaced windows to first floor – three to no. 16 and two to no.14. All are 1/1 modern top-hung casements with painted granite cills. Both gables are abutted by adjoining properties. Rear elevation is abutted by a very large modern shed which fronts onto alley through carriageway. Remainder of this elevation is smooth rendered with small two-paned modern casement windows.

Historical Information

A house is noted at this location on the 1834 town map and valuation. Although captioned as a post office on the 1860 town map, the valuations from 1862 to 1929 (and probably beyond) describe the premises as a house. Its dimensions in the 1862 valuation are 14yds x 8.5yds a 2.5 storeys. The HMBB survey card, dated May 1970, states that the dormers had small glazing panes, that all windows were sliding sashes, and that coachway had a segmental head. Primary sources: 1.
