Exterior Description And Setting

A single storey basalt built cottage, natural slated roof with three brick chimneys four bays long with painted brick heads to windows to road side. An additional room appears to be attached to house but under a corrugated metal roof which extends over out house. Under the eaves the typical two courses of brick headers acting as beam filling and slight corbelled fascia. Most of the basalt walls front and rear are butter pointed though more so to the rear. It is assumed under the slated roof there are basically two units, kitchen and room but the latter appears to be divided in two longitudinally and the two windows to the rear have much lower cill levels so that one of the bedrooms has a lower floor. The single kitchen window to the rear is much higher. The windows to the front are much larger with one large fixed pane and top hung opening out vent. The front door is modern with glazed panel. The cottage with out house in line is set back three metres from road side and without hedge though an unkempt hedge gives partial screening to the bedroom window. Across the road an L shape layout of single storey basalt built out houses with corrugated metal roofs with small section in natural slate.

Evaluation

The cottage, out house and out houses across road make a good vernacular group of the late Georgian period. Does not, however, merit listing.
