Exterior Description And Setting

A two unit one storey cottage, basalt built with some galleting at quoins, with central door and window on either side, gable ends each with chimney and roofed with corrugated iron. Front windows are matched with window on the near side. Each window has a flat brick arch, 1 brick deep, a sandstone cill and splayed internal reveals. Windows are double casements. The cottage has a magnificent
setting on the edge of the wooded slopes with the trees forming live scenery to an undulating meadow which falls away to the flat lands bellow. The cottage had a stone made path wending its way up to it along a clearing in the trees though it is now overgrown with grass. Behind the cottage and slightly below it are the unroofed ruinous walls of a two room outhouse.

Historical Information

Is similar in construction to other cottages on the Bellarena estate but its porch and corner fireplace gives it a distinct plan variation. The structure may have been a hunting cottage for the Gages. Sisters called Begley had resided in it for several decades and it is now in the ownership of Mr Jingles who hopes to restore and renovate. He has already made a start. It is shown on the 1831 Ordnance Survey Sheet and is probably late 18th century. References Neighbour Ordnance Survey Maps
