Exterior Description And Setting

A long two storey rendered house four bays long with asbestos slated and gabled roof, set at right angles to Aghanloo Road with the gable about three metres from road side. At the upper end, and in line, a single storey stone built outhouse, part the same width as the house and the remainder narrower. The wider part of the out house is slated with stone Sperrin slates and the narrower part with Bangor blues. Across the yard and at angle to the main axis of the house there is another slated single storey outhouse. To the rear of the house and in line with the third bay there is a flat roofed two storey back return containing staircase. The simple main entrance door on the north elevation is flanked by two narrow windows one of which lights the kitchen, the other the narrow hallway. The windows of the house have recently been replaced with black stained top hung windows. The window of the projecting bay of the kitchen remains unchanged. There are two chimneys. Rainwater goods are cast iron. The simple whitewashed gate piers and strap wrot iron gate are also of note.

Historical Information

There is a small rectangular date stone on the west gable of the house - T C 1764. It is likely the house was originally single storey in the later 18th century and became two storey c 1800. The chimney detail to the single storey and two storey are similar. The staircase was moved c 1931 when a Mr Moody a Scottish farmer was in possession and recently with N I H E assistance the house was renovated. The present owner (1997) inherited the property from Mrs Robinson of the Dogleap. The structure is recorded on 1831 Ordnance Survey Sheet. A James Stewart is recorded as occupier in Griffith’s Valuation of 1858 when the Marquis of Waterford was the immediate lessor.
