Exterior Description And Setting

Former thatched cottage to southern side of Duncrun Road. Parallel to the road and facing north west with a fine view over Magilligan. Now enclosed in thicket and briars. Thatched roof collapsed, slates of adjoining room largely dislodged. Condition of windows, doors and interior hard to determine due to undergrowth. Barn outbuilding to north east presents gable to road with unusual window framed in plaster architrave tin roof of barn also in bad condition.

Historical Information

Building said to have been built by mason who built the tower of the adjacent St Cadan’s Church. Formerly a “five bay, one storey rubble cottage, half thatched and half tiled”. Girvan 1967. A photograph in Girvan’s book for the U.A.H.S. shows a neat cottage with low clipped hedge on the road side, white painted gate and a porch with flat roof and two circular windows. The windows are double sashed. There is a building on this site on the 1831 map. Building used as a pub when owned by Eatons pre World War II. Jack Bolt married into the family and lived there with wife until after war. Dan Summers, a carpenter, and his wife Rosanne lived in the house until death in 1970s. House lay empty before being bought by Douglas in 1980. Thatch fallen in since, slates stolen last winter. Reference: U.A.H.S. Buildings of North Derry by Girvan. Mrs Mary McLaughlin Neighbour
