Exterior Description And Setting

A limestone and basalt rubble structure on a square plan built into a slight hill, with two orders of recessed segmental arches with limestone voussoirs containing a draw hole to the front face. The charging hole on top is entirely overgrown and access to it fenced off. The structure stands on a hillside behind a farm well beyond the main road but is not visible from it due to surrounding trees.

Historical Information

Precise date of building not known but it appears on the OS map of 1857. Built for the small-scale burning of white limestone, commonly known as chalk, to reduce it to a rough powder for various uses. References – Primary Sources 1. OS Map 1857, Co Antrim 25.
