Exterior Description And Setting

A limestone and basalt rubble structure on a square plan, built into the side of a hill, with three orders of recessed segmental arches of limestone to the front, in which is located the draw hole. There is a circular charging hole on top but it is overgrown and access to it from above closed off. A hole has been broken into the south side of the chamber where some stonework is missing. The structure stands on an elevated site in a field behind a farm, well above the main road but visible from it.

Historical Information

Precise date of building not known but it appears on the OS map of 1832. Built for the small-scale burning of white limestone, commonly known as chalk, to reduce it to a rough powder for various uses. References – Primary Sources 1. OS Map 1832, Co Antrim 25.
