Exterior Description And Setting

A one/two-storey range incorporating two houses and corn drying kiln, all now very ruinous. Located a short distance south-east of the corn mill (HB16/07/064A) and aligned down the slope such that its west end accommodates the two-storey kiln. Pitched natural slate roof now gone except that section over house at east end. Random rubble walls with projecting eaves and traces of lime render. All sections entered from north side. Both houses each have one room and a door and window on north wall. Upper floor of kiln can be entered from ground level at left side of bay and lower floor also from ground level at right side of bay. Much of kiln wall on north side ruinous. Two windows to kiln on west gable; that to upper floor has projecting cill.

Historical Information

Building shown on 1833 OS 6" map. The 1836 Ordnance Survey Memoir notes the mill as being erected about 1730 and belonging to William N Barron (but rented by Samuel Fitzsimmons). The kiln may well have been erected at the same time. The 1838 Valuation Book also notes Barron as owner. Kiln measured 51ft 6in x 17ft 6in x 12ft and the miller's house 28ft x 17ft 6in x 7ft 6in. The second Valuation of c.1861 describes the house as workmen's houses. The Valuation revision books note James Wamsley as taking over the lease of the mills in 1868. However, they had reverted to Barron by 1874. The kiln was vacant in 1888 (as was the corn mill) and ceased to be used thereafter. Primary sources: 1. 1st edition OS 6" map, Down sheet 42 (1833). 2.
