Exterior Description And Setting

Situated on north-facing slope at SE corner of farm complex. A single pot of rounded rubble fieldstones, 2.1m diameter and now partly infilled. Short loading ramp at rear. A ramped track leads up to the west side of the kiln from the farmyard. The front and sides are of roughly squared granite rubble. The front measures 4.6m wide by 3.1m high. At centre is a 1.4 x 1.35m high opening to the draw hole. It slopes down and narrows to the drawhole proper.

Historical Information

First shown on the 1859 OS 6" map, suggesting a mid 19th century date of erection. However, it could be earlier and its absence from the 1833 map must be treated with caution. Primary sources: 1. 1st edition OS 6" map, Down sheet 42 (1833). 2. 2nd edition OS 6" map, Down sheet 42 (1859).
