Exterior Description And Setting

A granite post set into the verge on north side of Hilltown - Byransford, at boundary between Goward and Ballynanny townlands, c.100m east of junction with Hilltown - Kilkeel road. Measures 22cm in cross section and 65cm exposed. Rounded top. Inscribed on west face in 12.5cm high letters is "NB". All other faces are blank.

Historical Information

First shown on the 1919 OS 6" map, but undoubtedly older. 'NB' denotes Narcissus Batt, a prominent Belfast entrepreneur and landholder in the eastern Mournes during the early 19th century (his main residence was at Purdysburn, Belfast). His name is also commemorated in Batt's Wall which runs from Crotlieve Mountain (grid J 213240) to Shanlieve (240227), and in a boundary stone in Mourne Mountains West townland (HB16/07/056).
