Exterior Description And Setting

Two storey harled and white washed house, three structural bays wide, eaves height just above storey and a half height. Central doorway flanked on either side by two windows. Four pane sashes to south west, two pane casements to north east. Four smaller four pane sashes aligning above. Open lattice work porch around door with pitched roof and decorated barge. Bangor blue slates to roof overhanging gable with decorated barge, brick chimneys on ridge above gables. Single storey lean-to abutting gable to north east with two pane casement aligning with other ground floor windows. North east gable has two single pane windows at high level and no openings in the end of the lean-to. In the rear elevation to the south east the window arrangement is less ordered. A central porch with metal roof has a six pane metal window, a door to its north east side and a small single pane window to the south west. A two pane casement lights the kitchen in the south west of the facade with a single pane casement above nearer the porch. Two similar sized windows are at ground and first floor on the other side of the porch. On the south west gable there are two small high level windows flanked by two timber verticals similar to shutters and two ground floor windows, that to the front a four pane sash. The building is set back six metres approximately from Broad Road. There is an L shaped range of barns to the north east and a small hedge and garden in front of the house.

Historical Information

Not on the 1830 Ordnance Survey Map. Shown on the 1848 survey with one small out-house to north east perpendicular. Present arrangement on 1907 map. Present occupant bought house in 1979 from Henry McClary. He had used the building as a farm and owned land to the rear. At an earlier date the building was a shop with petrol pump. The present kitchen was used for this purpose. The old sign is stored in one of the barns. References: O.S.S. 1848

Evaluation

A fine grouping of vernacular buildings at the junction of Broad and Gortgarn Roads. The house is simply but well proportioned. The simple traditional /Georgian white washed harling style is complimented by the treatment of the more Victorian barges and chimneys. It is of interest as a Victorian development of a traditional type and as a good quality country building.
