Exterior Description And Setting

Stone bridge with two arches each 5 metres wide rough stone voussoirs and projecting central cutwater. New stone parapet on top. Width of carriageway increased to downstream side where parapet forms part of realigned Drenagh Estate wall. Four circular pillars at each end of the new parapet presumably in imitation of the original detail. Drain pipe along exterior of upstream (south) parapet.

Historical Information

Bridge indicated on 1831 map. Recorded by Ordnance Survey Memoirs as: ‘Drummond Bridge, 2 arches each 14 feet wide, walls 3 feet high, walls extended to Mr McCausland’s gate. Breadth of the bridge on the top 33 feet. Another one between this bridge and Mr McCausland’s Estate 14 feet wide, walls 18 inches. Dated 27 March 1835’. Second bridge described also still in existence. Demolitions and alterations to the bridge occurred with the road realignment of Broad Road from Limavady (Crossnadonnell) during the late 1980s. Bridge probably dates from circa 1790 though it may be earlier. IHR No.

A large, late Georgian period bridge, unfortunately altered by the destruction and rebuilding of the parapets in a similar stone but of different coursing.
