Exterior Description And Setting

A walled garden bound by 3.600 metre high wall constructed of rubble sandstone in part of the south west and north west side and the remainder in red brick. There are a number of round headed openings giving access. It encloses an area of 1.14 hectares. Within and along the north west wall are the remains of former glass houses. It is used manly for vegetable produce with some fruit trees (some pleached) and there are several extensive polythene covered enclosures.

Historical Information

A walled garden of similar size and location is shown on the 1831 map. The Ordnance Survey Memoirs states “The garden, consisting of about three and a half acres, contains excellent fruit trees and is well sheltered by high walls and the surrounding planting”. The walls probably date from c1796 and evidently the garden was more than doubled in size at an early date.
