Exterior Description And Setting

Two storey terrace shop with attic of c.1910-20 set on the W side of Main Street, Newcastle. This shop has been much modernised in recent years and has been completely amalgamated with the two formerly separate properties to the S (Nos.99-101). To the front there is a large modern shop front which stretches across all three. At first floor level No.97 has retained its two window openings and large gabled attic half dormer with semicircular headed window with moulding above. All windows now with modern window frames. Overhang to gabled half dormer with plain barges and finial. No.99 is similar but with an extra window to the first floor, whilst the front of No.101 is completely modern To the rear the whole block has been greatly enlarged with the addtion of modern extensions. The interior was once a decoratively tiled butcher's shop. The butcher's shop closed some time ago and the building has gone through several retail functions since. As a result the tiling has been removed and no trace survives in situ.

Historical Information

This building probably dates from c.1910-20 and (judging from its former interior detailing) appears to have either begun life as a butcher's shop, or was converted to one early in its lifetime. The butcher's seems to have closed in the 1970s. Since then the property has housed a clothes shop. It is now a large furniture and flooring shop and has been amalgamated with Nos.99 and 101.
