Exterior Description And Setting

Two room direct entry former thatched house now with corrugated metal roof. Main facade faces due west onto a yard created by a bend in the river Lynn. Single barn in line to north white washed as main house with a lean-to shed against its gable. Concrete block sheds in line to south not white washed but with the corrugated metal roof of the main house. Sheeted entrance door off centre. One four pane sash window to south two smaller four pane sashes to north. Two chimneys on ridge, one aligning with each end of the house. Sand /cement rendered blockwork barn of similar width and pitch as house 1.5m directly behind house. Four small sash windows unequally spaced along the rear facade of the house. No bed outshot. The building is situated in a dip in the small hills surrounding the Lynn river and is perpendicular to Windyhill Road 20 metres away. In a field to the west two well maintained gate posts with strap iron gate complement the
setting.

Shown on 1831 map. Photograph found in house from early in the century showing building thatched. Windows have been slightly altered since. Half door. Door to north barn has been widened and a window blocked up. Thatch continued over barn. Barns and lean to of blockwork. Access to roofspace not possible to ascertain if original structure remains. Neighbour thinks thatch removed in 1950s. References: O.S.S. 1831 Owner (1997)

A good example of a two room vernacular direct entry cottage, beautifully situated in a depression at a bend of a river. The subdivision of the main rooms is an interesting hybrid of the type. With the exception of the concrete floors and the upper room fireplace, all the original fittings are well preserved including the door stop from a broken horse shoe iron
