Exterior Description And Setting

The bridge carries a minor road over the Upper Bann. It comprises three segmental arches, the left one of which is dry in normal circumstances. It is of finely dressed granite blocks throughout, with the exception of soffits which are of random rubble Schist. The piers have rounded cutwaters to both up- and downstream sides; these terminate at arch spring level in shallow domed tops. The stonework to the spandrels and parapets is laid randomly. Embellishment takes the form of a projecting platband in finely dressed granite running across just above crown level, oversailing copings of saddleback profile, and shallow-domed out-curving terminal piers to the parapets. The parapet walls are 45cm thick and the roadway 5.60m, making a total width of 6.50m (22ft). The roadway is raised over the floodplain at both ends. The bed of the river is pitched with stone boulders.

Historical Information

A road is shown on either side of the river on the 1834 OS 6" map, but no actual bridge. It was probably erected around this time. It is cited as 'New Bridge' on the 1859 map. Primary Sources: 1. 1st edition OS map - 1834 (Co Down sheet 48). 2. 2nd edition OS map - 1859 (Co Down sheet 48).
