Exterior Description And Setting

Two storey house with hipped natural slate roof, wet dashed walls and paired openings; set in mature grounds within the Mourne Grange complex with attractive dome coped granite gate piers to Newry Road. Access to survey denied.

Historical Information

In 1900, Allen Carey, tutor to the Kilmorey children, took over the lease of the house. He opened Mourne Grange Preparatory School in the same year, apparently the first such school in Ireland. It is believed this house was the head masters house. The school eventually closed in 1971 and in September of that year became Mourne Grange Village Community. Sources: 1. A.M. It is likely (and from the external description)) that this building has been altered in the same manner as the others on the site (HB16/05/014A & 014B). Although of some historic interest, it is reasonable to assume that the building has no features of special significance and does not warrant statutory protection. It may be possible to gain access at some future date to confirm this.
