Exterior Description And Setting

A large single-storey/ one-bay building orientated parallel to south side of main road. Pitched natural slate roof with exposed rafter ends. Half-round metal gutters. Walls of wet-dashed random rubble. North elevation, to road, has a large modern corrugated metal sliding door to left of centre and another at right end. Whether these are enlargements of original openings, or new insertions is unclear. Wall otherwise now blank except for a plaque at centre inscribed: "Erected/ by/ Very Rev. Richard Marner D.D.P.P.V.F./ 1890". Left gable contains a large 3x7 pane timber window with opening three-pane semicircular head and granite cill. This and all other windows are above head height (thus preventing pupils from looking out). Small circular vent in apex. Right gable identical. South elevation now abutted to eaves level by an agricultural shed with monopitched corrugated asbestos roof. At left, on wall of main block, is a wide entrance opening to eaves level - again it is difficult to determine whether it is an enlarged original opening or new one. To its right are four window openings; two of these have remains of timber sliding sash windows, and the opening at right is now infilled; all have granite cills. A random rubble wall forms boundary to road. Two low square granite piers indicate position of former gates, but this opening has been infilled. Part of the wall has been demolished at its west end.

Historical Information

Datestone notes erection in 1890. Rev. Marner, the parish priest, was also responsible for the chapel at Attical (HB16/05/011), opened in the same year. School first cited in Valuation Revision book the following year. Superseded by an adjoining school in 1963; this school closed in 1998. Primary sources: 1. Datestone. 2. PRONI – VAL 12B/19/13C.
