Exterior Description And Setting

A one and a half storey/ three-bay house, south facing on north side of Killowen Road. Pitched natural slate roof with three cement rendered and coped chimneys, one to each gable and one on party wall between left and central bay. Tile coped verges. There are three gabled dormers to facade, each with a plain timber bargeboard. Semicircular metal rainwater goods. All walls are cement rendered. Walls of principal façade have raised stepped render quoins to each corner. Door is on right bay and is modern timber with a glazed pane. Above is a electric light. Each remaining bay at ground floor has a 2/2 (vertically divided) sliding sash window with a concrete cill. There are similar windows to all first floor dormers. Left gable is blank. Continuing to left is the right cheek of the rear return with a t+g sheeted door and small timber window. Rear elevation is abutted across its entire length by a return, the mono-pitch roof of which continues from main roof but at a shallower angle. Its walls are cement rendered and on its rear wall is a t+g sheeted painted timber door and two windows: that to left is a 2/2 window as those on facade and other is a small fixed modern window. Abutting right gable of main block is a single storey return (the same depth as main block), with pitched natural slate roof, no chimneys and walls as main block. It has no doors and has a single window to facade (2/2 as others). There is a small front garden enclosed by a smooth rendered and coped wall with two separate pedestrian gates. Garden continues to left around the house.

Historical Information

Although a building is marked at this location on the 1834 OS 6” map, the present house dates from 1896. A Valuation Revision book entry for that year notes “house rebuilt and improved”.
