Exterior Description And Setting

A single storey cottage in semi-derelict condition with derelict additions to each end. Main entrance faces west. West elevation has two windows to the left of a short projecting porch and one window to the right. Windows and main entrance are boarded up. Walling of roughcast render with smooth cement rendered plinth and similar raised dressings to openings. Plaque between two windows to left: rectangular sandstone, inscribed 'Built by P.H.y. 1795 & Mouni Egel' (or 'Mount Egel'). Render spalling from red brick nib walls of porch with vegetation on top. Roof of corrugated iron. Rainwater goods missing except metal downpipe to porch. Red brick chimney on south gable. North gable is of exposed basalt field stones now that the additional block to the north is roofless and the walls are partly collapsed. Rear elevation is inaccessible due to overgrown vegetation. South gable mostly enclosed by an additional block, which has a corrugated iron roof. SETTING: The building stands in a very rural location, facing onto the main road and set back from it slightly with rough grass verge in front. In the first survey in 1972 the building was described as "A roughcast cottage with rendered dressings and slated roof. One gable rises to a brick chimney; there is a further stack on ridge. The sheeted door with rectangular fanlight and two vertical astragals is contained in a lean-to projecting porch under extension of main roof. There are two unrecessed sash windows with horizontal divisions on one side of porch and one on the other. Roughcast outbuildings extend north and south, roofs are slated, corrugated iron or asbestos."

Precise date of present building not known but it appears on the OS map of 1858, apparently a rebuilding of a predecessor on site which appears on the OS map of 1833 and which is referred to in a plaque as "Built by P.H.y 1795 & Mouni [or Mount] Egel".
