Exterior Description And Setting

Site (at the W end of the N side of Movilla Street) of a three storey terrace block (latterly used as a sports club) now demolished with general site occupied by a car park. Description from 1st Survey card "3 sty building. Roof slated, gable ends. Chimneys rendered. Front wall rendered, lined and painted. Stone dressings. Dentilled eaves course. 6 2nd Fl. blocked window openings, raised segmental arch head and keystone, mld cill and panelled apron and 2nd Fl. mld string course. 6 F/Fl. D/H windows, horiz. astragals, s/c arch head bevel keystone, label mldg, mld cill, panelled apron and all slightly recessed. Heavy F/Fl. stone cornice. Gr/Fl. has a series of arched openings- segmental- s/c-segmental-s/c-s/c doorway-s/c and segmental. All except the doorway are windows. All have fluted keystones extended upwards with panel to meet F/Fl. Cornice. All have label mldgs rising from the caps of separating pilaster piers, mld cill developing as surface and heavy base. 2 R/H windows have mld cill and panelled apron above surface. Extreme R/H arch contains blocked s/c arch window. Windows generally have blocked lower half and fluted glazed in varied panes above. Doorway has segmental arch transome and plain fanlight and flush panel door. Back wall in rough dressed Scrabo stone rubble with brick dressings to openings."

Historical Information

Though there are buildings shown on this site on the 1834 OS Map and on that of 1858-60, the terraced block which stood on this site until recently had a late Victorian appearance and was probably built c.1880 and may originally have been built as stores.
