Exterior Description And Setting

One of two adjacent hydraulic rams in Carnamuff townland along the side of a small stream not named on Ordnance Survey Maps. ‘The hydraulic ram is a simple type of pump which uses the kinetic energy of a moving column of water to pump a part of that column to a greater height than that of the water supply. (Electricity from the Red River appendix II). This ram consists of a weir serving an underground pipe whose route can be made out in a ridge along the bank. About ten metres downstream the pipe re-emerges at a rectangular concrete box with tin roof.

First appears on current edition of Ordnance Survey Maps. Adjacent ram has a date plaque of 1961 and this construction is probably similar. Used to pump water from the river to a tank to feed cows by the farmer. Reference: Plaque Electricity from the Red River by NIE, Appendix II
