Exterior Description And Setting

Two storey, five bay farmhouse in a derelict condition, on flat land, set back 20 metres from Glenhead Road. Building faces almost due south towards the road. Walls are harled and whitened. Windows, aligning at ground and first floor are irregularly spaced along the facade. Ground floor windows covered up with corrugated metal. First floor windows mainly gone, traces of twelve pane sliding sash windows remain. Roof, Bangor blue slates. Four chimneys with sand/cement render. One on each gable, two around the central bay. Flat roofed porch projects from second bay from west gable window facing south, door to west, simple projecting string course on parapet. Gable walls similar with single window at first floor level. Rear elevation, windows irregularly spaced, projecting single storey kitchen return. Behind the building are the remains of single storey farm outbuildings, some still used for storage purposes. To the south, a tree lined avenue connects the farmyard with Glenhead Road. On Glenhead Road in line with the building is the remains of a cast iron gate post.

Historical Information

First indicated on the Ordnance Survey map of 1848. It is likely that it was initially built as a three bay wide house, the central bay of which contained the present porch. The two bays to the east would have been added at a later date. The house has lain empty for a number of years as the buildings and farm were purchased by a farmer already living on Glenhead Road to supplement his holding. Neighbours suggest mid 1970s for the date of this purchase. House formerly the residence of a Mr W Horner, a barrister and money lender. House on former Ogilby of Pelipar lands and seems to have been the house of the large tenant farmer of the area. Reference: OSS 1848 Information obtained from neighbours

A large vernacular farmhouse. Interesting as a late example of the type. Bad proportions detract from the quality of the architecture. Of historical interest as an example of a large tenant farmer’s house but does not merit listing.
