Exterior Description And Setting

A pair of square gate piers built of coursed white limestone, with tall pyramidal caps of white limestone rubble; apex of pier to east is damaged; gates missing. Short low screen walls of basalt rubble to each side. Setting: the piers stand within the grounds of Red Hall, at the end of a side driveway from the south where it joins the main entrance driveway from the east. Adjacent to the western pillar is a circular turret. The
setting is secluded, surrounded by and overhung by mature trees.

Historical Information

Built in connection with Red Hall. Do not appear on any OS maps but do appear in engraved view of Red Hall in 1869. Precise date of building not known but they may date from the rebuilding campaign on the estate in the early 1800s. They lie within the area of a scheduled monument, no. ANT47:4. This is a pair of stone pillars which provide an interesting element of late Georgian garden design, and which together with the later Victorian garden turret adjacent, forms a picturesque group.
